Accurate Adoption Language

Past Terminology/Less-Accurate should now be said as Accurate/Currant Terminology: 

 

• Real Parent, natural parent should now be said as Birth Parent/Biological parent

• Own Child, Real Child, Natural Child should now be said as  Birth Child

• Adopted Child, own child should now be said as My Child

• Adoptees should now be said as Person/Individual who was adopted

• Illegitimate should now be said as Born to unmarried parents

• Give away, adopt out, give up, put up should now be said as Make an adoption plan/choose adoption

• To keep the baby should now be said as To parent the baby/child

• Adoptable child/unwanted child should now be said as Child in need of a family

• Adoptive Parent should now be said as Parent

• Handicapped child, hard to place should now be said as Child who has special needs

• Is adopted should now be said as Was adopted

• Giving away your child should now be said as Choosing an adoption plan

• Putting your child up for adoption should now be said as Finding a family to parent your child

• Keeping your baby should now be said as Parenting the baby/child

• Closed adoption should now be said as Confidential adoption

• Unwanted/problem pregnancy should now be said as Unintended pregnancy

• Real Mom should now be said as Birth mom/Biological mom
